An enlightening piece about some of the Muslims who worked at the World Trade Center and died there, and the Muslim prayer room in the WTC that was also destroyed.  Strangely, despite the presence of a prayer room, the WTC was never considered a mosque.  And I wonder how these people feel - being reviled by Americans who weren't even there on that day for being complicit in a crime that they were victims of?

On any given day, Mr. Abdus-Salaam’s companions in the prayer room might include financial analysts, carpenters, receptionists, secretaries and ironworkers. There were American natives, immigrants who had earned citizenship, visitors conducting international business — the whole Muslim spectrum of nationality and race.

Leaping down the stairs on Sept. 11, 2001, when he had been installing ceiling speakers for a reinsurance company on the 49th floor, Mr. Abdus-Salaam had a brief, panicked thought. He didn’t see any of the Muslims he recognized from the prayer room. Where were they? Had they managed to evacuate?

He staggered out to the gathering place at Broadway and Vesey. From that corner, he watched the south tower collapse, to be followed soon by the north one. Somewhere in the smoking, burning mountain of rubble lay whatever remained of the prayer room, and also of some of the Muslims who had used it.

Given the vitriolic opposition now to the proposal to build a Muslim community center two blocks from ground zero, one might say something else has been destroyed: the realization that Muslim people and the Muslim religion were part of the life of the World Trade Center.

I read ontd_feminism  just for the hell of it. Mostly for the "are they being serious right now?" aspect of it. But holy shit. What a bunch of whiners.  Everybody gets "triggered" over this or that. Don't mention eating disorders without a "trigger warning" or they'll go off on some binge/purge thing just by seeing the words. And it will be YOUR FUCKING FAULT for being an insensitive asshole.  Don't even talk about scales or BMIs.  Don't mention drugs or alcohol because it is triggering to recovering addicts and you'll be the cause of them going on a 3 day bender.  The mention of rape, of course, is a big trigger.

You know what?  Toughen the fuck up. Yeah, we all have our issues. Rape is a big one and something I happen to know about. But really, how the fuck do you people live being so sensitive?  If some real tragedy happened, most of these broads would just keel right the fuck over.  In fact I would wager none of them could survive in about 3/4 of the countries on the planet.  You know, the ones where women have actual problems? Like getting gang raped on sight or killed because some man thinks she besmirched his honor?

There are lots of words you can't say either.  There are obviously the really offensive ones, which aren't said by polite people anyway. But "moron" is out. So is "stupid". Don't type the word "dumb". Or "idiot".  You can't say something is really "lame".  Those words are "ableist", even though none of them are actually used to describe ailments and haven't been for a very long time.   Since before most of those sob sisters were even born, I'd imagine.   Also, don't reference intelligence because then you are being classist.  In fact, don't say things like "way to be classy" because...oh fuck, I don't know.

And everybody there is on the same bandwagon. I have a feeling it is a case of the emperor having no clothes but then maybe I'm just taking crazy pills.

Oops.

I just discovered the messages folder. How dumb, eh? I mean, I know it is there because I see the little thingie that says "messages" up by my icon. I just never thought about it. I guess I thought they were from when I wanted to follow a thread, and since I rarely do I just ignored them. So anyway, I'm not a snob, just an idiot, lol.

Thunder

Legend of the Seeker

Okay, so I finished watching this series on Netflix tonight. I generally like sword and sorcery stuff, there is some pretty in the show and Bruce Spence is a hell of a lot of fun. But good lord, was there ever a dumber hero? This guy spent the whole series gumping his way around the place, doing exactly the opposite of what his advisors told him to do. But it all works out because a) the hero has a Good Heart and b) his advisors are around to clean up after him. Also, Twoo Wuv. (puke)

Don't get me wrong, I liked it. What is life without something to snark at? Plus, Craig Parker. Guh. And the hero had some mad abs. Come to think of it, that's probably why the Confessor overlooked his complete lack of anything resembling a brain.

Memorial Day brouhaha

I'm irritated about the big manufactured freak-out about Obama not being at Arlington on Memorial Day. Is that the only national cemetery that counts? Incidentally, the ONLY recent prez not to miss a Memorial Day at Arlington was Clinton. Bush the first never went to Arlington. Reagan missed a few and didn't even bother to send his VP. Bush II missed one, but he went to Normandy instead so I guess that's acceptable. But funny how it's a big deal when the black president with the suspicious middle name doesn't go.

I used to be a registered Republican. But after the last few elections I've been so appalled by the behavior of both parties (and their fucking brainless minions) that I am now registered as nonpartisan. If you're going to be pissed off about what one president or party does then don't be a goddamned hypocrite and excuse that same behavior in your own party.

I've never had much of a green thumb but it definitely runs in my family so I'm giving it a(nother) shot. I started some tomatoes, sweet peas (my favorite flower) and lavender from seed. So far the sweet peas and tomatoes are doing great. Only two of the lavender seeds have sprouted, but I may just throw the rest out into the yard and let them do what they will. It grows very well in my area. I've also bought cucumber, green pepper and roma and celebrity tomato seeds. I wanted more but I think I'm getting a little too ambitious.

Another thing I want? Chickens. Probably not this year though, unless I am able to get a decent coop to hold them on my limited funds. There are way too many predators around here so I'd just be giving some creatures a really nice meal.

Um...what?

I just got done watching Death Race, and there is a line in there that I'm having trouble processing. One of the characters states, "Ok cocksucker...fuck with me and we'll see who shits on the sidewalk".

I've been known to throw down some pretty lively profanity in my day but for some reason I'm having a hard time here. Maybe it's just late, I don't know. But does anybody on my flist have a fucking clue as to what that might mean? blog stats

Election 2008

Why am I not surprised?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2JPbQOHEkY

This is a youtube video of McCain in 2000 being very much a proponent of a progressive tax system in which the wealthier pay more because they can afford it. The very thing he is pushing as a reason NOT to vote for Obama. I will seriously LMAO if McCain is elected (whilst simulaneously packing my bags)and this is what the country ends up with. We're flat broke - who else is the money we need going to come from? Politicians have a habit of saying whatever is going to get them elected, but McCain's got a record of it. Just click on the link and then go watch any of his recent rallies.

When McCain was nominated, I was relieved. Him, I could live with in case of an Obama loss. But this McCain, the one who will seemingly say anything to get elected, who has been increasingly erratic and who chose that horror of a woman to succeed him should he die, that's not someone I want to entrust my country to. I can only hope enough of my countrymen feel the same way.blog stats

Stolen from darklyscarlett. Kind of a lame character to be, but I couldn't be bothered to go back and change my answers. So...the Weasley Twins it is!

I guess this is pretty close - I stole it from evil_jacquie I'm not as cute as a fox though - they look like little catdogs. *grin*

You scored as Fox, You are the Fox. You are quite intelligent and use it to your advantage. You are a diplomatic person and use that to help your friends in times of crisis, not choosing sides. You are also very patient, waiting for what you want.
